For the populace of Nha Trang, the monumental contributions of Dr Alexandre Yersin—affectionately revered by the local community as “Ông Năm”—remain immeasurable. Throughout the Summer 2026 expedition, successive generations of PHS students were afforded the profound opportunity to deliberate upon his life and his extraordinary legacy to humanity:
🔬 Global Medical Foundations: The seminal identification of the plague bacillus (Yersinia pestis) and the subsequent formulation of the therapeutic anti-plague serum, which effectively preserved millions of lives globally.
🌲 Geographical Exploration and Botanical Acclimatisation: Pioneering the initial exploration of the Lang Biang Plateau (Da Lat) alongside the successful introduction and cultivation of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and the cinchona tree (the source of quinine) within Vietnam.
💖 Altruistic Character and Philanthropic Legacy in Nha Trang: Consecrating his entire existence to this coastal region, establishing a complimentary medical clinic for impoverished fishermen, and nurturing local children with profound paternal benevolence.
The Doctor’s comprehensive library, spanning a vast spectrum of scientific disciplines and humanities, elicited profound admiration from both the faculty and the student cohort.
Standing before his austere sepulchre situated upon the high hills, whilst observing archival research artefacts imbued with historical gravitas, the PHS students did not merely enrich their historical and geographical knowledge. Crucially, they were inspired by his ethos of unceasing intellectual inquiry, rigorous scientific innovation, humanitarian empathy, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
Whilst the expedition has concluded, these profound tenets of gratitude shall endure as an invaluable cornerstone, guiding the students throughout their academic and personal development! 💙
