Jupiter is the biggest planet in the Solar System. Its diameter is about 139,820 kilometers, while Earth’s is only about 12,756 kilometers. That means Jupiter is more than 1,300 times bigger than Earth, with a surface area of around 61.4 billion square kilometers.
Jupiter is made mostly of hydrogen and helium gas, and it has no solid surface. If someone tried to land there, they would just fall into thick layers of gas and be crushed.
Jupiter also has some huge storms, the most famous one is called the Great Red Spot. This storm has lasted for more than 300 years, and anything that enters it would be blown away by strong winds.
Another special thing about Jupiter is its ring system. The rings are very faint and were first discovered in 1979 by the spacecraft Voyager 1.
Jupiter also has at least 95 moons. The four most famous are Io, Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede. Io has the most volcanoes in the Solar System. Europa may have a hidden ocean under its icy surface that may contain life. Ganymede is the largest moon in the whole Solar System. And Callisto is like a museum of the Solar System’s history, keeping records of old impacts on its surface.
Time on Jupiter is also very different. A day on Jupiter is only about 10 hours, but a year there is as long as 12 years on Earth. So, if someone is 12 years old on Earth, on Jupiter they would just be 1 year old.
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun, after Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Because it is so big and bright, we can see it with our eyes from Earth on clear nights. But what we see is only a bright dot in the sky, not the real colors or special features of the planet.
Those are some of the amazing facts about Jupiter.
