A SET OF KEYS FOR THE ‘GOLDEN WINDOW’ OF LANGUAGE GROWTH
The age of 6–7 is the “Golden Window”—a critical period for children to build a robust and lasting linguistic foundation. At this stage, a child’s brain is remarkably receptive to sounds, sentence structures, and mimicry. To optimise this potential, education requires a harmonious blend of real-world experiences and scientific pedagogical methods.
At PHS, we do not treat language as an isolated subject. Through our small class sizes and constant opportunities for practice, we integrate language principles into experiential activities for both Vietnamese and English. Our 1-to-1 and small-group interactions allow teachers to closely monitor and nurture each student’s individual linguistic development.
10 Keys to maximising language potential in year 1
- Building “living vocabulary” through experience: Language goes beyond textbooks. Vocabulary truly “lives” only when children understand the context, use the words themselves, and hear them used by others.
- Encouraging expressive read-alouds: Listening to adults read helps children familiarise themselves with intonation, rhythm, and complex sentence structures. By reading expressively themselves, children grasp the emotions behind the words, fostering deeper linguistic thinking. Notably, our Music and Drama curriculum at PHS significantly enhances students’ English pronunciation and prosody.
- Cultivating active listening skills: At this age, listening ability dictates speaking ability. PHS Year 1 students are taught to fully listen to a story or instruction before responding, helping them develop focus and logical reasoning. They are encouraged to ask for clarification when needed, ensuring they know exactly what to listen for.
- Focusing on phonetic accuracy: The age of 6–7 is the ideal time to correct fundamental pronunciation errors. Phonological accuracy is the foundation that gives children the confidence to communicate and prevents the formation of hard-to-break bad habits. Our subject teachers work collaboratively to provide consistent practice.
- Developing questioning skills: In our small-class environment, children are actively encouraged to ask: “Why?”, “How?”, and “What if?”. The ability to pose questions is the key to critical thinking and expanding one’s linguistic repertoire.
- Creative storytelling: Our Year 1 students are regularly invited to recount their day or create imaginative tales. Ordering events with a logical “beginning, middle, and end” helps children learn how to organise their ideas and use linking words effectively.
- Integrating language with movement and the Arts: Language is absorbed more naturally when paired with active participation (such as role-play or STEAM projects). In every 35-minute lesson, students have ample opportunity to use language to persuade, describe, and share ideas with their peers and teachers.
- Creating a “safe-to-fail” environment: From day one, children learn the value of respect and teamwork. When a child uses the wrong word or structure, they feel comfortable correcting themselves, supported by the encouragement of their teachers and classmates.
- Nurturing a culture of reading and free writing: From browsing books to reading and retelling stories, we encourage a love for literacy. Writing journals, composing short letters, or adding captions to drawings helps children understand that language is a tool for preserving memories and expressing personal thoughts, rather than just an academic skill.
- Using technology as a “learning companion”: At this age, children can be introduced to digital platforms for research or language-based AI games. This provides access to modern technology while simultaneously sharpening linguistic thinking in the digital age.

With 20 years of expertise in both research and pedagogy, the PHS Teacher Council is proud to share these ten keys with parents and fellow educators. A testament to the effectiveness of this approach: by the middle of the second semester, our PHS first graders were confidently leading the school flag-raising ceremony and co-presenting their projects to the entire primary school division alongside their teachers.
We wish all Grade 1 parents a joyful journey as you support your children through this first milestone! And to our wonderful first graders, may you quickly master both Vietnamese and English!
